Cobblestones are small, round stones commonly seen, even today, paving the roads in some European villages and some of the more quaint American cities and towns.
Cobblestone was the one of the first natural stone material used in the making of roads and walkways. In order to eliminate dirt and muddy roads and walkways, cobblestone was used for decades, so much so that it is quite an historic material.
Streets and roads made of cobblestone were slowly replaced with tarmac by the early 1900’s. However, in parts of Europe there a places where cobblestone pavements have been preserved for their historic beauty and value.
Cobblestones were simply stones collected mainly from riverbeds, then arranged or ‘cobbled’ together, and then set with mortar. Cobblestone is not a geographical term; it refers to the process where stones are cobbled, to form cobble stoned surfaces and pavements.
